The AI Bias Feedback Loop: When Underrepresentation Shapes the Algorithm

Our Women in AI Report 2025 uncovered a troubling pattern: women’s underrepresentation in AI doesn’t just limit opportunities—it actively shapes how the technology behaves. With women making up just 22–26% of AI roles globally, and only 18% of AI researchers, biased systems are being trained by skewed datasets and homogenous perspectives.

The result? Algorithms that replicate—and sometimes amplify—real-world inequities. Facial recognition models perform worse on darker-skinned women. Healthcare algorithms under-prioritize female patients. Even resume filters reflect gendered assumptions about leadership potential.

Why it matters: AI bias isn’t a technical glitch—it’s a representation problem. Fixing it starts with getting more women (and diverse voices) at the design table.
