The Leaky Pipeline Problem in AI

In partnership with

Hey ,

Welcome to this week’s Tech Ladies AI Weekly!

AI is racing ahead, but the path for women in tech still isn’t smooth. One of the most striking insights from our Women in AI Report 2025 is the “leaky pipeline”—how women enter tech, but too often slip out before reaching the leadership roles where AI decisions are made. This week, we’re breaking down why that matters, and what you can do about it.

A free newsletter with the marketing ideas you need

The best marketing ideas come from marketers who live it.

That’s what this newsletter delivers.

The Marketing Millennials is a look inside what’s working right now for other marketers. No theory. No fluff. Just real insights and ideas you can actually use—from marketers who’ve been there, done that, and are sharing the playbook.

Every newsletter is written by Daniel Murray, a marketer obsessed with what goes into great marketing. Expect fresh takes, hot topics, and the kind of stuff you’ll want to steal for your next campaign.

Because marketing shouldn’t feel like guesswork. And you shouldn’t have to dig for the good stuff.

🌟 Big Idea of the Week

The Leaky Pipeline Problem: Why We’re Losing Women in AI

From classrooms to C-suites, women’s representation narrows at every stage. Women earned nearly 40% of computer science degrees in the 1980s; today that number is just 23% in North America. By the time we reach academia, women hold only 16% of tenure-track AI faculty positions, and in industry just 8–9% of CIO or CTO roles.

Why it matters: These gaps compound. Fewer women in research means fewer role models. Fewer women in leadership means fewer voices shaping AI strategy. Without intervention, the cycle continues—leaving women underrepresented in the rooms that define the future.

This week’s challenge:

  • Mentor someone earlier in their career or studies—you could be the role model who changes their trajectory.

  • If you’re already leading, create space for junior women to engage in AI projects directly.

  • Advocate for inclusive hiring and promotion practices at your company.
