The Case for Slowing Down (Even When You’re Ambitious)

Hey ,

In tech, we move fast—launching features, chasing metrics, pivoting toward the next big thing. But when your work is built around speed, slowing down can feel counterintuitive, even risky. Yet, for many women in tech, that pause is exactly what keeps careers sustainable.

A recent McKinsey report found that 42% of women in tech report burnout symptoms, compared to 35% of men. The pressure to constantly perform—to prove you belong in rooms that weren’t always built for you—adds an invisible tax to success. But pausing doesn’t mean losing momentum; it means protecting your long-term capacity to lead, create, and innovate.

Slowing down can look different for everyone: blocking calendar space for deep work, saying no to one project to say yes to rest, or even redefining what “growth” means this quarter. As Arianna Huffington put it, “We think, mistakenly, that success is the result of the amount of time we put in. Instead, it’s the quality of time we put in.”

The truth is, stepping back strategically often helps you move forward faster—and with more clarity. Whether you’re navigating a career transition, leading a team, or just trying to make your workday feel more human, give yourself permission to take a breath.

At Tech Ladies, we’re building a future where women in tech can thrive without burning out—and where success and sustainability can coexist.

Here’s to growth that feels good.
