If networking feels exhausting lately, you’re not imagining it. Between constant Slack pings, LinkedIn posts, virtual events, and “quick coffee chats,” many women in tech are feeling stretched thin—connected to everyone but supported by very few.

At this stage of your career, networking isn’t about collecting contacts. It’s about building relationships that compound over time. The kind where someone understands your goals, can advocate for you when opportunities arise, and feels comfortable being honest with you in return.

That requires intention.

Instead of asking, Who else should I meet? try asking:

  • Who actually understands my work?

  • Who challenges my thinking?

  • Who would I call when I’m stuck—or celebrating a win?

Research backs this up. A 2022 Harvard Business Review study found that smaller, trusted professional networks are often more impactful for career advancement than large, loosely connected ones—especially for women. Depth, not volume, is what drives sponsorship, referrals, and long-term growth.

This is especially important in tech, where informal networks often determine who hears about opportunities first, who gets pulled into high-visibility projects, and who gets recommended behind closed doors.

So if you’re feeling burned out by networking, consider this your permission slip to slow it down. Be selective. Be generous. Invest in a few relationships that actually move you forward—and let go of the pressure to be everywhere.
