Hey {{first_name}} ,
There’s a weird point in your career where being the most competent person in the room stops being the thing that gets you ahead. We learn how to execute, solve problems quickly, manage complexity, and keep things moving. Early on, that’s what gets rewarded.
But leadership changes the equation. At a certain level, everyone is smart. Everyone works hard. Everyone can deliver results. And in an era where AI is making execution faster for everyone, judgment becomes even more valuable. If everyone has access to the same tools, then discernment becomes the advantage.
What actually starts separating leaders is judgment. A lot of this comes down to taste — not aesthetic taste, but having a clear point of view about what good looks like. So how do you actually build better judgment as a leader?
A few things we’ve noticed from leaders who do this well:
They spend more time deciding what not to do than reacting to every opportunity.
They protect time to think instead of filling every hour with meetings.
They stay close to customers, even as they become more senior.
They develop opinions outside of work through reading, conversations, culture, and curiosity instead of only consuming industry takes.
They ask questions.
The leaders who stand out are rarely the loudest people in the room. They’re the ones with strong internal standards. You can feel it in how they hire, communicate, prioritize, and make decisions.
Because eventually, leadership stops being about proving you can do great work; it becomes about defining what great work should actually look like — for your team, your company, and the culture you’re shaping.
